The Jewish Religion

In class we began to talk about the Hebrews and the start of Israel and Palestine.  Going along with this region and the Hebrews, their new religion came with it.  We talked about how the reason the Hebrews were so much different than everyone else was because they were the first people to have a monotheistic religion.  That religion that they adopted was called Judaism.

Like I said before, Judaism is the oldest monotheistic religion and it all started with Abraham.  God called down to Abraham and asked him and the people of his village to move to Canaan, where God promised that they could own that land.  This was the first covenant anyone ever made with God and was the start of a religion that will forever be that of the Jewish people.

The second covenant that anyone ever made and was probably the most important, was the covenant between Moses and God.  Moses led the Jews out of slavery in Egypt and brought them all the way to the land of Canaan where at Mount Horeb, God gave these people the Ten Commandments.  This was officially the beginning of Judaism and all followers of the faith still go by these Ten Commandments every day.

The Ten Commandments are so important to this religion because God directly gave them the the Jews and all they want to do is live in his image.  That is one of the biggest goals of this religion, to live in God's image.  Here are the Ten Commandments:

1. You shall have no other Gods before Me.
2. You shall make no idols.
3. You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain.
4. Keep the Sabbath Day holy.
5. Honor your father and your mother.
6. You shall not murder.
7. You shall not commit adultery.
8. You shall not steal.
9. You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.
10. You shall not covet.

Now that I have explained a little about the history of Judaism I can tell you about some of the most important people of the history of the religion.  The first major figure would obviously be God.  All followers of this faith wanted to live in God's image and he is the only God that they believe in.  Without God, monotheism would have taken a lot longer to develop and we do not even know for sure if it would be around today without Judaism.

Other important people would be Abraham and Moses.  These two were the first two people to ever make a covenant with God and they both had a lot to do with the beginning of the religion.  Saul, David, and Solomon were also very important because they built the first Great Temple in Jerusalem. These three were also rulers of the United Kingdom of Israel and Judah.

I hope that this information has given you a little bit more insight on the Jewish religion and that you found most of it interesting.  For more information on this religion you can go to:
