Living Like The Romans

Today I am going to be bringing you back into time with me to learn about some advances that the Roman's made that affect our every day lives now!

What really got the Romans into developing new things was competition. When the Romans saw another country coming up with new ideas, the Romans just HAD to make those new ideas bigger and better for themselves. Due to that attitude Rome has come up with some of the most important things we have in our society today.

#1: Do you ever remember hearing Greek myths as a kid? Well, the Romans liked the myths and legends so much that they took some of the Greek Gods and added to their own religion using the Greek Gods but changing them to have more "Roman like" attitudes and different names. Now, the Romans did have their own belief system they just wanted to add some Greek Gods into their lives because they thought that they were cool.

#2: Now, Romans didn't always steal things from other civilizations, they did invent some things on their own. For example, public health care. The Romans chose to live extremely healthy lifestyles and wanted their people to be able to get health care whenever they needed.

#3: Welfare! Yes, the Romans had welfare for the poor in their community because they believed that everyone should have access to food and shelter. Now, back then it wasn't called "Welfare" but was called grain relief. This system made food for the poor Romans cheaper and easier to acquire.

#4: Latin was the Roman thing, without the Romans who knows what language we would be speaking. Latin has been influencing languages for years. We can thank them for influencing English, French, and even Spanish!

#5: Have you ever driven on a road or walked on a sidewalk? Well, the concrete that you walk on was invented by the Romans! The Romans had a habit of taking over cities and whatnot and when they took them over they needed a way to reach their new city. They decided to build roads with milestones and gutters. The roads were always connected to Rome in a straight line. So next time you're driving just think about how much thought was actually needed to have the road system we do today!

  1. Great, fun and easy to read article. When I first started to read this I was connecting the Roman way of life back to the concept of "Keeping Up With The Jones'" and how people always strive for and have a desire to be seen as wealthy and ahead of their counterparts. I do find it interesting, however, how progressive and forward thinking the Romans were even back then. The idea of having a society with healthcare and welfare for those who are in need is hard to fathom, even today.
